I am a mother to a six year old daughter, she started first grade this year and I noticed from when she was in Pre-school and started to read and write her alphabet that her letters where backwards I started paying closer attention to it and would question the teacher about it and they would tell me that it is normal so I went with it. In kindergarten it was obvious to me that there were obvious signs of dyslexia, as it is normal in some children I was not overly concerned but since there is a history of Dyslexia in the family it should be addressed sooner than later. As parents our views must not have been shared by the teachers since nothing ever came out of it. Right after school ended I received a call from the teacher explaining that although my daughter is not up to the reading level needed for first grade she will be moving up and that I should read with her everyday during the summer to get her up to the appropriate reading level for first grade. we did read everyday before bed we would read together but it was not enough because now we are two months into her first grade year and my daughter brought home two out right failed spelling tests. I immediately wrote a letter to the teacher asking for a meeting which was scheduled the following week and again I explained my concerns for my daughter being Dyslexic and was once again told that she would watch for signs but it is common but she is concerned that my daughter is not at the appropriate reading level, for first grade. Wouldn't this be a sign that reinforces my position that there is an ongoing problem maybe she should be tested to see if it is something she may need extra work with besides by me at home. You have to ask yourself with everything that I have asked the teachers to look at from all of my daughters teachers do they actually see my child at all?
